E-waste, also known as electronics that are coming to an end of life, are piling up at rates faster than ever before. But still the recycling rate for e-waste is less than 20 percent globally.
Recycling rate creates a concern, as it is uncertain as to how the other 80 percent of e-waste is being managed during the disposal process and the location of final placement. Many electronics contain toxic heavy metals and materials such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. E-waste that is improperly discarded can potentially leach into groundwater and soil which can be harmful to human health and our environment.
One of the main issues worsening e-waste is the extremely high consumption rate of electronics. Per capita, around the globe, people are purchasing more electronics year over year. The relevance of electronic devices expires faster and faster due to the rapid advancements in technology. As a result, e-waste volumes are increasing.
Even though it is called “waste,” e-waste should be seen as an opportunity. For example, there is 100 times more gold in one ton of mobile phones than in a ton of ore from which gold is extracted. Collection of resources from electronic equipment produces substantially fewer carbon dioxide emissions than mining. Electronic goods in operation and their components are worth more than the materials they contain. Therefore, extending the life of products and the reuse of components brings an even greater economic benefit.
To improve collection and the circular economy, more countries are taking action and creating policies around e-waste and its handling. The annual Global E-waste Monitor reports that, since 2014, the number of countries that have adopted a national e-waste policy, legislation or regulation has increased from 61 to 78 countries.
